RIM, Nokia respond to Apple’s "Antennagate" press conference

Research in Motion and Nokia issued official statements Friday decrying Apple’s use of their handsets to demonstrate signal loss in their press conference addressing the iPhone 4 antenna problem. In response to a firestorm of criticism from the media and consumers, Apple held a press conference Friday to address issues with the iPhone 4 antenna. During the conference, chief executive Steve Jobs said the antenna problem was “a challenge for the entire industry.” Jobs then highlighted several phones also experiencing signal loss when gripped, including the BlackBerry Bold 9700 from RIM, Samsung Omnia II, and the HTC Droid Eris

Nokia turns to Russian police to recover lost prototype smartphone

In a move similar to the ongoing investigation of a “missing” iPhone 4 unit involving Apple and Gizmodo , Nokia has contacted Russian police in an effort to regain a prototype smartphone from a blogger who leaked details of the device. The Wall Street Journal published a report this week detailing Nokia’s attempts to recover a prototype N8 smartphone from Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin

Apple accused of violating multi-touch patent in ITC complaint

A Taiwanese maker of chips and touchscreens has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to ban the import and sale of Apple products for alleged violation of a multi-touch patent.

Successful iPhone app helps TomTom withstand free competitors

Personal navigation company TomTom this week reported a profit in its fourth fiscal quarter of 2009, thanks in part to more than 100,000 sales of its popular GPS navigation application for the iPhone. The iPhone application crossed the six-figure mark in terms of sales in less than six months on the market. Motorola files a complaint against RIM with the International Trade Commission

It’s all lawsuits and complaints galore this year with Apple against Nokia, Nokia against Apple and now Motorola against Research In Motion. Apparently, according to Motorola, RIM is violating five Motorola patents which involve Wi-Fi access, application management, power management and UI.

Apple in position to increase acquisition activity in 2010 – report

With a war chest of $23 billion in cash, along with increasing competition by Google, Apple looks to continue its recent trend of acquisitions in the new year. While Apple has acquired only 11 small companies since the return of Steve Jobs in 1997, three of those have been in the past five months, indicating an increased emphasis by the company on acquisitions.

Third Nokia lawsuit accuses Apple of multiple patent violations

Nokia has filed a another lawsuit against Apple, with a new federal complaint that alleges the Cupertino, Calif., company has infringed on several “implementation patents,” the same cited in an ITC suit filed last week. Filed in a federal court in Delaware, the complaint alleges that a number of Apple’s products have violated patents owned by Nokia
