Apple-backed SproutCore takes on Flash in race to deliver multitouch web apps

SproutCore, the open source “Rich Internet Apps” framework Apple adopted and invested in to construct its online MobileMe suite of web apps and its iWork.com service, is taking on a larger life of its own as independent companies use it to deliver sophisticated multitouch web apps targeted at iPad and other HTML5-savvy tablets. Among those using SproutCore to target the new market for such multitouch RIAs is Strobe, Inc., founded by Charles Jolley, the founder of SproutCore and until just recently a core developer of Apple’s own SproutCore apps. Jolley is now working both to advance SproutCore into the multitouch realm, and to promote solutions based on SproutCore that help publishers bridge the gap between desktop web apps and those aimed at running on touch-based devices

For our entry into the world of double digits, we sat down with Late Night host (and all around awesome dude) Jimmy Fallon for a lengthy and hilarious conversation about games, gadgets, “The Wizard,” and much, much more. Then Microsoft’s Kudo Tsunoda joined the team onstage for a demo of the company’s Kinect — including a look at how the underlying tech actually works. Finally, Josh, Nilay, Paul, and Joanna sat down to rap about — and play with — the latest and greatest gadgets (including some unreleased gear).

First look: Apple’ new unibody Mac mini

Apple’s new aluminum unibody Mac mini retains its role as the company’s low price, compact PC and server while adding HDMI output and support for Secure Digital Extended Capacity flash memory cards with higher speeds and capacities (more than 32GB). The physical size of the new Mac mini shifts from a 2 inch tall, 6.5 inch square unit into a new 1.4 inch tall, 7.7 inch square form factor similar to 1.1 inch tall Apple TV. Also new compared to the previous Mac mini and Apple TV is its new unibody shell, which slides the logic board and power supply in through the open rear side, rather than sandwiching a cover on top of a base.

Novero’s Bluetooth headset doubles as neckwear, savings destroyer

Can’t say we’ve ever heard of Novero before today, but after watching the undoubtedly mesmerizing homescreen loop linked there in the source, we can safely say we’ll never (ever) forget about ‘em. From what we can gather, this company specializes in overpriced jewelry, and given that Bluetooth headset use is rising stratospherically , seeing a new necklace-slash-BT headset hit the market just makes perfect sense. All sarcasm aside, the new Victoria line actually is fairly edgy, and if the light hits you right, it’s actually palatable

Evoluce 47-inch HD multitouch display gets off-screen gesture control

Evoluce, the manufacturers of that mammoth 47-inch full HD touchscreen , are out of control! Apparently, they’ve decided that unlimited simultaneous touch inputs (and thus unlimited simultaneous phalanges) was not enough, so they’ve gone an’ added gesture support — up to half a meter from the device.
